We recently met a couple who had floated down a portion of the Rio Grande on a guided raft trip during the last full moon. Of course, we know all about Sierra County’s favorite river-related pastime… during the day. Nothing beats the afternoon heat better than tubing downstream in the cool waters between Elephant Butte lake and Williamsburg. Float the Rio Grande at night

But, at night?

Dipping into the river below the dam, slipping silently past Ralph Edwards Park and the Hot Springs district, a friendly face to help pull you out of the river at the end- that all sounds pretty darn nice right about now. Our new friends raved about their moonlit trip and described it as quiet, lovely, romantic; almost magical.

We inquired with their host, ‘Captain Bob’ of Whitewater Weekends, who’s planning another trip for the next full moon on July 2nd. For $20 per person, he’ll provide the kayaks, life jackets and rides back to the put-in point. Check out SierraCountyEvents.com for details; make reservations soon, though, he expects to have a full house (er, boat.)
