One of the New Mexico’s most newly incorporated communities, Elephant Butte sits just west of (and takes its name from) the largest lake in the state.

Hailed as the “Diamond in the Desert,” Elephant Butte  is home to Sierra del Rio, a 5-star Golf Course that was recognized by Gold Digest magazine as one of the state’s Ten Best courses. It offers 18 holes, a driving range, a sport shop, a bar with outside seating on a deck that overlooks the course, and a full-service restaurant.

Year-round recreation is available, and the city’s population swells during the summer, especially on big holiday weekends. Many of the city’s events center around Elephant Butte Lake State Park, from drag boat races to sailing regattas.

Check SierraCountyEvents.com or or Elephant Butte’s Chamber of Commerce website for more info on events.

Elephant Butte hosts several popular annual happenings including a fall Balloon Regatta that coincides with “Elephant Days,” and the Independence Day fireworks show.

Especially festive is the Beachwalk Luminaria Festival and Floating Parade of Lights (2nd Saturday in December at Elephant Butte Lake State Park). Thousands of luminarias line specially-designed beach paths; visitors enjoy music and food provided at campfires by local organizations and businesses. This popular celebration also includes a parade of illuminated boats, and prizes are awarded at the end of the evening for best-decorated watercraft, RV, home and business in Elephant Butte.
